The choice of wood we use is explained separately, however the way we make a coffin is also important.

How is the Coffin or Casket made?

The Coffin or Casket is crafted using a combination of traditional methods and high efficiency industrial type machines. These are controlled in such a way as to minimise waste and energy.

How is a Coffin or Casket polished?

production (1)The Coffin or Casket once constructed has to be polished to a high standard to enhance the colour and natural grain detail effect. Aesthetically pleasing but also desirable as it seals the wood stopping dust and damage during its use.

The types of polish we have used have changed in accordance with the Environmental Protection Act; this basically means we have to comply with guidance to reduce the emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) which the polish gives.production (2)

The emissions occur during the application of the polish (overspray) and during its drying.

Over a decade ago we used a polish which was solvent based. This was quick drying but had very high VOC emissions, this was replaced with a Compliant Polish which uses significantly less solvent and therefore has lower VOC emissions.

In the new factory we wanted to further improve our emission beyond the Act’s requirements. To achieve this we installed a special system which uses an an Ultra Violet cured water based polish this system has no VOCs and is used on all our coffins.
